How to Close a Window and Quit an App on a Mac

What you need: A Mac with a window of the app you want to close on the screen.

Steps

  1. Look at the left end of the menu bar, the row of words across the top of the screen. Beside the Apple logo, the name of the app you are using appears in bold, such as Notes. If it shows a different name, click an empty part of the strip along the top of the window you want to close, away from its buttons.
  2. Look at the upper-left corner of the window. Three round buttons sit side by side: red, yellow and green.
  3. Click the red button. The window closes, or a message about saving appears.
  4. If a message asks whether you want to save or keep the document, choose what happens to your work. If the message has a Save As name field, you can keep the document by following steps 7 to 9 of How to Save a Document in the Documents Folder on a Mac. If it has no name field, click Save to keep your changes. Click Cancel to go back to the window and keep working, or Don't Save or Delete to close the window and lose the changes.
  5. Look beside the Apple logo again. If the name is Finder, you are finished: Finder, the app that shows your files and folders, always stays open. If the app's name is still there, the app is still open, even though its window is closed. If a different name appears, the app has already quit and you are finished.
  6. Click the app's name beside the Apple logo, then click Quit followed by the app's name, such as Quit Notes, at the bottom of the menu.
  7. If a message asks whether you want to save your changes, choose as in step 4.

Expected result: The app's window is closed, and its name no longer appears beside the Apple logo in the menu bar. For a Finder window, only the window closes.
