How to Type Capital Letters, Spaces and Corrections on a Mac

What you need: A Mac with a keyboard, and a box where you can type more than one line, such as the box on the practice page that opens when you click Start the demo below these steps on the website.

Steps

  1. Click inside the box. A thin blinking line (the text cursor) appears. What you type appears at the blinking line.
  2. To type a letter or a number, press its key once, briefly, then let go. Letters come out as small letters (a, not A). The numbers are in the row of keys above the letters. If you hold a letter key down, a small row of the same letter with accent marks may appear above it; press the esc key (at the left end of the top row of keys) to close it without changing anything.
  3. To put a space between two words, press the Space bar, the long key at the bottom of the keyboard, once.
  4. To type one capital letter, hold down the Shift key (marked shift or ⇧; there is one at each end of the second row of keys from the bottom). While holding it, press the letter key once, then let go of both keys. Only that letter is a capital.
  5. To remove a wrong letter, press the delete key (at the top-right of the main keys, often marked with a left-pointing arrow) once. It removes the letter just before the blinking line. Press it once for each letter to remove, then type the right letters.
  6. To start a new line, press the Return key, the large key at the right end of the middle row of letters. The blinking line moves to the start of the next line. In a box with room for only one line, such as a search box, Return sends what you typed instead.
  7. If every letter comes out as a capital without Shift, Caps Lock is on. Press the Caps Lock key (marked caps lock or ⇪, at the left end of the middle row of letters, beside A) once to turn it off. Then press delete to remove the capital letters and type them again.

Expected result: The words you typed appear in the box, with a capital letter only where you held Shift, a space between the words, and a new line where you pressed Return.
