How to Find the Apple Menu, the Menu Bar and the Dock on a Mac
What you need: A Mac that you have signed in to.
Steps
- Look at the top of the screen. The row of words and small icons across the top edge is the menu bar. If you do not see it, move the pointer, the small arrow on the screen, to the very top edge of the screen and keep it there until the menu bar slides down. To move the pointer, slide your mouse, or slide one finger on the trackpad.
- Click the Apple menu, the Apple logo at the left end of the menu bar: move the pointer onto it, then press the mouse button (or the trackpad) once and let go. A menu opens with commands such as About This Mac, System Settings, Sleep, Restart and Shut Down.
- Click the Apple logo again. The menu closes.
- Look just to the right of the Apple logo. The name of the app you are using appears there in bold, such as Finder, followed by that app's menus, such as File and Edit. When you use another app, its name and menus appear here instead.
- Look at the bottom of the screen for the Dock, the row of app icons. On some Macs, the Dock is along the left or right edge instead. If you do not see it, move the pointer to the very bottom edge of the screen and keep it there until the Dock appears.
- Move the pointer onto an icon in the Dock, such as Finder (the blue smiling face at the left end of the Dock, or at the top if the Dock is along a side), and hold it still without clicking. The app's name appears above the icon (beside it if the Dock is along a side). If you click by mistake and a window opens, click the red button at the window's top-left corner to close it.
- Look at the right end of the menu bar. The date and the time are shown there.
- Near the time, find the Control Center icon, which looks like two small switches. Clicking it opens Control Center, where you can change the volume. You do not need to click it now.
Expected result: The Apple menu is closed, and you have found the menu bar, the name of the app you are using, the Dock and the name of one of its apps, the time, and the Control Center icon.
