How to Find Start, the Taskbar and the Clock on Windows 11
What you need: A Windows 11 computer that you have signed in to.
Steps
- Look at the bottom of the screen. The bar along the bottom edge is the taskbar. If you do not see it, move the pointer, the small arrow on the screen, to the very bottom edge of the screen and keep it there until the taskbar slides up. To move the pointer, slide your mouse, or slide one finger on the touchpad.
- Find Start, the Windows logo made of four small squares, on the taskbar. It is usually at the left end of the row of icons in the middle of the taskbar. On some computers, it is at the far left of the taskbar.
- Click Start: move the pointer onto it, then press the left mouse button (or the touchpad) once and let go. The Start menu opens above the taskbar, with a search box at the top and app icons below it.
- Click Start again. The Start menu closes.
- Move the pointer onto an icon on the taskbar, such as File Explorer (the yellow folder), and hold it still without clicking. A small box shows the app's name. If that app is already open, a small picture of its window appears instead, with the name at the top. If you click by mistake and a window opens, click the X at the window's top-right corner to close it.
- Look near the right end of the taskbar. The time and the date are shown there.
- Just to the left of the time, find the small icons for the internet connection, the sound (a speaker) and, on a laptop, the battery. Clicking these icons opens Quick Settings, where you can change the volume or connect to Wi-Fi. You do not need to click them now.
Expected result: The Start menu is closed, and you have found Start, the name of a taskbar icon, the time and date, and the Quick Settings icons near the right end of the taskbar.
Practice these steps
Try this task on a pretend Windows 11 screen in your browser. The steps guide you one at a time, and nothing changes on your own computer.
