How to Point, Click and Scroll with a Mouse or Touchpad on Windows 11

What you need: A Windows 11 computer with a mouse or a touchpad (the flat panel below a laptop's keyboard), and a web page open on the screen, such as the practice page that opens when you click Start the demo below these steps on the website.

Steps

  1. Find the pointer, a small arrow on the screen. To move it, rest your hand on the mouse and slide the mouse across the table, or slide one finger across the touchpad. The pointer moves the same way as your hand. Over words, the arrow changes to a thin upright line, which is normal.
  2. If the mouse reaches the edge of the table, lift it, set it down nearer the middle, and slide it again. The pointer stays still while the mouse is in the air. On a touchpad, lift your finger and start again from the other side.
  3. Move the pointer onto a button or a small picture on the page, and hold the pointer still for a moment without clicking. Many buttons and pictures then show a small label with their name. The label goes away when you move the pointer off.
  4. To click a button, keep the pointer on it and press the left mouse button (or the lower-left part of the touchpad) once, then let go. Keep the pointer still while you press. The button does what its label says.
  5. To scroll, move the pointer onto the words of the page. Roll the wheel on top of the mouse, between the two buttons, toward you. On a touchpad, place two fingers on it side by side and slide them up together. The page moves.
  6. If the page did not move, or moved toward its top instead of showing words from further down, roll the wheel or slide your fingers the other way. Keep scrolling until you reach the end of the page, where it stops moving.
  7. Scroll back up the same way, rolling or sliding in the other direction, until you see the top of the page again.

Expected result: You moved the pointer, saw a label appear, clicked a button, and scrolled to the end of the page and back to its top.
