How to Point, Click and Scroll with a Mouse or Trackpad on a Mac
What you need: A Mac with a mouse or a trackpad (the flat panel below a Mac laptop's keyboard, or a separate one beside the keyboard), and a web page open on the screen, such as the practice page that opens when you click Start the demo below these steps on the website.
Steps
- Find the pointer, a small arrow on the screen. To move it, rest your hand on the mouse and slide the mouse across the table, or slide one finger across the trackpad. The pointer moves the same way as your hand. Over words, the arrow changes to a thin upright line, which is normal.
- If the mouse reaches the edge of the table, lift it, set it down nearer the middle, and slide it again. The pointer stays still while the mouse is in the air. On a trackpad, lift your finger and start again from the other side.
- Move the pointer onto a button or a small picture on the page, and hold the pointer still for a moment without clicking. Many buttons and pictures then show a small label with their name. The label goes away when you move the pointer off.
- To click a button, keep the pointer on it and press the left mouse button once, then let go. On a mouse with a smooth top and no buttons to see, press down on the left half of its top. On a trackpad, press down on it with one finger until you feel a click, then let go. Keep the pointer still while you press. The button does what its label says.
- To scroll, move the pointer onto the words of the page. If your mouse has a wheel on top, roll the wheel away from you. If your mouse has a smooth top, slide one finger up on its top. On a trackpad, place two fingers on it side by side and slide them up together. The page moves.
- If the page did not move, or moved toward its top instead of showing words from further down, roll the wheel or slide your finger or fingers the other way. Keep scrolling until you reach the end of the page, where it stops moving.
- Scroll back up the same way, going in the other direction, until you see the top of the page again.
Expected result: You moved the pointer, saw a label appear, clicked a button, and scrolled to the end of the page and back to its top.
